Chile-Argentina border pass weather closures and logistics

Adverse weather conditions, including snow and ice, have led to several closures and restrictions at international border crossings between Chile and Argentina.

In the Maule Region of Chile, authorities announced the closure of Ruta 115-CH Internacional Pehuenche as a preventive measure due to forecasted weather. The restriction affects vehicle circulation from the “El Médano” sector up to the international border.

By late August, the Pino Hachado international pass was closed due to snow and ice accumulation. While other regional crossings like Mamuil Malal, Icalma, and Hua Hum remained operational, they were subject to specific restrictions, such as requirements for snow chains or limitations to small vehicles. The Pichachén pass remained closed due to heavy snow and seasonal restrictions.

Recent reports confirm that Pino Hachado remains closed due to ice and snow on the roadway, affecting travelers in the Neuquén and Río Negro mountain regions. Vialidad Nacional has advised travelers to avoid these routes unless necessary. National Routes 40 and 23 also face challenges, requiring the use of chains and imposing restrictions on heavy vehicles. Other crossings, such as Mamuil Malal, Icalma, and Hua Hum, continue to operate under caution with specific requirements for chains or vehicle types.

The prolonged closure of the Los Libertadores pass, which lasted 34 days due to heavy snow, has prompted calls for improved trans-Andean logistics. In the Araucanía region, the CChC Araucanía is advocating for the strengthening of the Pino Hachado pass as a more resilient alternative. Additionally, officials in the Coquimbo region are proposing a $330 million investment to pave 44 kilometers of road at the Agua Negra pass to ensure more reliable transit.
