Chile police crime‑prevention campaign expands

Overview

In early July, Chilean police carried out a night‑time operation in the archipelago of Chiloé and seized several luxury vehicles in the upscale Vitacura district, signaling a focus on targeted enforcement actions. By the end of the month, police and municipal authorities reported a noticeable decline in crime across a range of regions. Expanded patrols, increased identity checks, and intensified drug‑control measures were linked to reductions in homicides, robberies and violent incidents, as well as large drug seizures and vehicle recoveries. Coordinated safety councils and preventive programs were credited with the downward trend, suggesting that the earlier enforcement operations are part of a broader strategy yielding measurable results. On 28 July, regional officials in Calama, Cholchol, Araucanía, Aconcagua, Maule and Ñuñoa announced further steps: upgrading a Carabineros barracks, boosting joint police‑military deployments, increasing nightly “rondas impacto” patrols, and recording sizable rises in detentions. Reported robbery‑with‑violence figures in Ñuñoa fell 51.8%, surprise robberies 23.3% and other robberies 31.1%, reinforcing the picture of intensified coordination and continued crime‑reduction momentum across Chile. By late August, law enforcement reported significant increases in operational activity and seizures. In Los Ríos, Carabineros reported a 35.8% increase in procedures, seizing 71 firearms, 20 knives, and nearly 99 kilograms of drugs. In Calama, police conducted over 68,000 procedures, seizing more than 16,000 kilograms of drugs, including 12 tons of processed marijuana. Other regional successes included a 38.9% increase in procedures in Punta Arenas, resulting in 2,282 arrests, and various coordinated patrols in Rancagua and Futrono. By late August, the focus expanded to include judicial and prison security challenges. President José Antonio Kast criticized a judicial ruling by the Iquique Guarantee Court that overturned the transfer of four members of the Clan Chen criminal organization.
