Chilean archaeological and railway heritage education
Overview
Educational initiatives in Chile are being implemented to connect students with regional historical and archaeological heritage.
In the Tarapacá region, students participated in an itinerant exhibition regarding the history of the former Alto Barranco railway station. This program used interactive tools, such as augmented reality and audiovisual capsules, to teach the history of the 1872 railway line that connected the saltpeter pampa to the port of Patillos.
Other programs have focused on archaeological awareness. In Paposo, workshops led by archaeologists taught students about the history of the Chango people and the proper reporting of archaeological finds. In Puerto Varas, the National Monuments Council introduced didactic guides to students following the discovery of a domestic occupation site dating from 1000 to 1550 AD.
