Chilean fruit fly outbreak management

Overview

Chilean authorities are implementing measures to mitigate the economic and phytosanitary impact of fruit fly outbreaks. To protect producers, the government has renewed a catastrophic collective insurance policy managed by Agroseguros. This program, which receives state subsidies of 45% to 65%, provides coverage for farmers with up to 50 hectares of crops. During the 2025-2026 season, the policy paid out over 600 million pesos to 398 farmers, with the Coquimbo region receiving the majority of the indemnities.

In addition to financial protections, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) and Carabineros de Chile have intensified roadside inspections in Poconchile. These operations focus on monitoring the transport of agricultural products to prevent the clandestine movement of pests from controlled areas. Officials stated these inspections are vital for maintaining the region’s phytosanitary status and safeguarding agricultural activity.
