Chilean healthcare service expansions and transfers

Overview

Healthcare services in Chile are undergoing expansions and logistical transitions to improve emergency and intensive care capabilities.

In the Coquimbo Region, the Coquimbo Health Service is investing over 250 million pesos to strengthen emergency services across the Elqui, Limarí, and Choapa provinces. This includes the establishment of a Primary Care Emergency Service (SAPU) at the CESFAM Urbano in Illapel to manage non-life-threatening emergencies and reduce pressure on local hospitals.

In a separate development, the SAMU is coordinating the transfer of high-complexity patients from the Quilpué Hospital to the new Hospital Provincial Marga Marga. To ensure continuity of care, SAMU is utilizing advanced ambulances equipped with intensive care unit capabilities, such as mechanical ventilation and infusion pumps. Dr. Jorge del Campo, Director of SAMU, noted that medical interventionists will be present to maintain ICU-level treatment during transport.
