Chilean media controversy involving María José Quintanilla

Controversy arose in the Chilean media following remarks made by Isidora Gaete regarding singer María José Quintanilla. During a broadcast of ‘Alfombra Roja’ on Canal 13, Gaete referred to Quintanilla’s performances at municipal festivals as ‘conciertitos’ (little concerts) and suggested the artist required the Viña del Mar Festival as a platform. These comments drew criticism from media colleagues, including Karen Paola, who called the remarks ‘tremendously classist,’ and Hugo Valencia, who described the tone as a ‘ninguneo’ (belittling) of the singer’s career.

In response to the situation, Quintanilla addressed themes of female solidarity during a series of sold-out concerts at the Santander Arena. While joined on stage by Mon Laferte, Quintanilla stated, ‘Women are more united than ever. This is what should happen to us. To see a friend shine and have the heart, soul, and spirit proud.’

When asked if her comments were a direct reaction to Gaete, Quintanilla clarified that her message of supporting fellow artists is a regular sentiment and that she prefers to avoid controversies to focus on her music.
