Chilean mining industry academic and professional training

Overview

Efforts to strengthen the connection between the Chilean mining sector and the academic community have progressed through both institutional initiatives and practical field training.

In the Biobío Region, the Ministerial Secretary of Mining, Daniel Escobar, initiated meetings with higher education institutions such as DUOC UC, INACAP, and the Virginio Gómez Professional Institute. These discussions focused on addressing the needs of the energy transition and critical minerals by bridging the gap between educational communities and the industry through specialized technical training and seminars.

Concurrently, mining operations have implemented practical training programs for students. At Codelco’s Ministro Hales Division, students have arrived in Calama for internships and thesis research centered on safety, production, and sustainability. Additionally, engineering students from the University of Chile conducted field tours at Minera El Abra to observe copper cathode production and learn about industry challenges, such as the transition toward sulfide exploitation.
