Chilean wood stove replacement initiatives

Overview

Efforts to reduce air pollution through wood stove replacement programs have emerged in various Chilean regions.

In the Biobío Region, Mallplaza Trébol and Enel launched a public-private partnership to replace traditional wood heaters with high-efficiency electric climate control systems. This initiative, part of the regional Atmospheric Decontamination Plan, aims to mitigate approximately 6,000 tons of particulate matter annually by installing 159 energy units at no cost to families.

Concurrently, the Chilean Ministry of the Environment has implemented a heater exchange program across the communes of Maule, Talca, Coyhaique, and Osorno. This government initiative allows residents to exchange wood-burning stoves for pellet stoves or air conditioning units, depending on the specific location. To participate, residents must register their current devices online and agree to surrender the old units for destruction.
