China high-speed railway network expansion
Overview
China has expanded its high-speed rail network with the simultaneous opening of four new lines spanning the northern, northwestern, central, and northeastern regions.
The new routes include the 552 km Xiong’an to Shangqiu section of the Beijing-Hong Kong high-speed railway, the 171 km Xi’an to Ankang section of the Xi-Yu high-speed rail, the 101 km Yichang to Xingshan line, and the 318 km Harbin to Yichun line.
Several of these sections, including the Xiong’an to Shangqiu, Xi’an to Ankang, and Yichang to Xingshan routes, feature a design speed of 350 km/h. The Harbin to Yichun line operates at 250 km/h, expanding the two-hour travel radius around Harbin.
These developments are intended to densify the national “eight vertical and eight horizontal” high-speed rail network, improve regional connectivity, facilitate economic development, and reduce transit times between major economic hubs and industrial zones.
