China space exploration and satellite deployment

China is expanding its space capabilities through both international scientific initiatives and domestic commercial satellite deployment.

In early September 2026, China announced the Cislunar CubeSat Constellation (C3) program, an international science initiative aimed at creating a networked monitoring system between Earth and the Moon. The project involves deploying 30 CubeSats by 2030 to monitor the space environment and explore lunar resources.

Simultaneously, China has made advancements in satellite mass-production and maritime launch technology. On August 19, 2026, the Honghu 03 technical verification satellite, developed by Hongqing Technology, successfully entered orbit via a Zhuque-3 rocket. This mission validates components for mass-producing satellites, including the ‘Jinwu’ argon Hall electric propulsion system and high-computing power onboard computers.

Maritime launch capabilities have also reached new milestones. On September 16, the Yinli-1 rocket achieved a record-setting maritime launch from the East China Sea using the ‘Oriental Aerospace Port’ vessel, delivering a net payload exceeding 3 tons. This mission deployed 26 groups of Qianfan polar orbit satellites and an EUHT technology test satellite to an altitude of approximately 800 kilometers, supporting the Qianfan Constellation project's goal of deploying up to 30,000 satellites for global connectivity.

This accelerated development is supported by a growing commercial space ecosystem and the refinement of national launch systems. The integration of Long March rockets with new commercial solid-propellant launchers, alongside the use of both land-based and maritime sites, has reduced preparation times and enabled the deployment of multiple satellites in single missions to support networks like the Xingwang constellation.
