Chinese automotive manufacturing regulatory scrutiny

Automotive manufacturers in China have faced increasing regulatory scrutiny regarding vehicle safety and production standards.

Initially, companies such as Zhejiang Geely Automobile Co., Ltd. and King Long United Automotive Industry (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. initiated recalls to address specific technical defects. Geely announced a recall of over 92,000 vehicles due to manufacturing fluctuations that could damage LiDAR sensor power ICs, potentially causing assisted driving malfunctions. King Long United issued a recall for 62 fuel cell semi-trailer tractors to address transmission controller software issues.

Following these recalls, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) launched a broader crackdown on new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturers for violating production consistency and quality safety standards. The MIIT identified several violations among major players, including BYD and Geely-related Zhejiang Haoqing. Reported issues included dimensional discrepancies in vehicle wheelbases and heights, fuel consumption exceeding official declared values in BYD plug-in hybrids, and failures to meet national safety standards for buses and trucks. In response to these findings, the MIIT has ordered rectifications and, in certain instances, suspended or revoked product announcements and electronic certificates.
