Cholera outbreak and humanitarian crisis in Sudan
Overview
In Sudan, the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a 10-day cholera vaccination campaign in the Tawila area of North Darfur. The initiative aims to protect approximately 95,000 displaced persons amidst ongoing security challenges and civil war.
Since the outbreak was declared in June, nearly 2,900 cases and 247 deaths have been reported across six states. Humanitarian efforts include the International Organization for Migration (IOM) providing emergency shelter and essential items to 12,000 people in the Tawila, Al-Layt, and Umm Hajaliz areas.
Mass displacement continues due to insecurity, with thousands fleeing areas near the borders of Chad and Ethiopia. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has called for the protection of civilians and the unhindered delivery of aid.
