Cimanggis Market gas explosion in South Tangerang

Overview

On October 14, 2026, an explosion occurred at a shop in the Cimanggis Market area of Ciputat, South Tangerang. Investigations identified the cause as a 52-kilogram ethylene gas cylinder and a distribution hose used for a banana ripening room.

The blast resulted in two fatalities, including a family in Pamulang who were struck by a box truck pushed by the force of the explosion. At least six victims were hospitalized with serious injuries, including severe burns and head trauma, with some requiring surgery or intensive care.

Local officials, including South Tangerang Mayor Piar Saga Ichsan and Regional House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Maria Teresa Suhardja, have visited victims to ensure medical expenses are covered. Suhardja has also called for concrete action regarding significant material losses suffered by traders and expressed concerns over the structural integrity of nearby buildings that appear tilted and potentially hazardous.
