Ciudad Juárez flooding and infrastructure concerns

Overview

Persistent water accumulation and flooding have created hazardous driving conditions in several sectors of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. In the downtown area, a water leak on Manuel Bernal Street has submerged large potholes, some exceeding two meters in length, forcing motorists into bus lanes to avoid damage. Additionally, Talamás Camandari Avenue has remained flooded for over a week following recent rains, causing significant traffic congestion as standing water obscures road damage.

In response to these complications, political tension has emerged regarding the city’s flood prevention capabilities. Ulises Pacheco, a local leader of the National Action Party (PAN), has called for transparency from the municipal government concerning investments in storm drainage and pluvial works. Pacheco emphasized that under the Municipal Code for the State of Chihuahua, the responsibility for maintaining storm drainage lies with municipal authorities. He is seeking specific details on how funds allocated for the 2026 public works program, including storm management and absorption wells, have been applied.
