Ciudad Juárez mayor's corruption controversy
Entities: PAN · Morena · Marco Bonilla · Ciudad Juárez · Cruz Pérez Cuéllar
Overview
In late June 2026, the administration of Ciudad Juárez’s mayor, Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, responded to a transparency request by filing an indirect amparo to prevent disclosure of the salaries of the mayor’s relatives, and after a court ordered the information to be released, the city appealed the ruling. Less than a month later, the controversy expanded when Pérez Cuéllar publicly accused municipal president Marco Bonilla of diverting municipal funds to a road‑project contract that allegedly benefited Bonilla’s political campaign. Pérez Cuéllar cited inflated costs for patrol vehicles, lighting services and interest payments, claiming the alleged misuse could have financed other projects. The mayor also warned against relying on opposition party divisions, linking the financial accusations to broader political tensions ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.
