Ciudad Juárez water and sanitation management

Overview

The Junta Municipal de Agua y Saneamiento (JMAS) in Ciudad Juárez has undertaken various initiatives to manage water distribution and infrastructure maintenance throughout 2026.

In July, the agency focused on providing water-storage tanks to residents in the Los Kilómetros zone, reaching over 60% of its 3,000-tank goal. Simultaneously, JMAS worked on repairing sewer collectors following subsidence incidents on Clara Fuentes avenue.

By August, JMAS reported addressing 20,784 service requests between January and July 2026. Paola Moreno, Director of Operations at JMAS, noted that these reports covered issues such as leaks in the general network and residential connections, low pressure, illegal connections, and water waste. Many leaks were attributed to components like valves or elbows that had reached the end of their useful life. July recorded the year’s highest volume with 3,384 incidents. The agency stated that response times generally range from zero to 72 hours. Crews are also working to repair eight sinkholes caused by aging infrastructure and recent rainfall.

Additionally, municipal authorities have called for improved coordination between the city and utility providers, including JMAS, Gas Natural, and Telmex. This follows instances where the municipality had to intervene to fill trenches left open by JMAS after citizen reports surfaced on social media. The administration aims to ensure service providers repair excavations promptly to protect newly rehabilitated streets and allow for efficient paving schedules. The mayor has invited the director of JMAS to participate in inter-institutional meetings to strengthen public service response.
