Extreme heatwaves and high humidity in Valencian Community

Overview

The Valencian Community continues to face severe environmental pressure from rising temperatures and climate-driven weather extremes. Ongoing heatwaves have intensified, with recent episodes seeing temperatures reach approximately 37 degrees Celsius in municipalities such as Elche and Xàtiva. High humidity levels, reaching up to 87 percent, have exacerbated nighttime conditions in coastal towns like Benidorm and Alicante, where temperatures remained above 27 degrees.

Recent data shows temperatures climbing significantly in the interior and pre-coastal regions. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reported that Utiel reached 36.5 degrees Celsius, marking the highest official temperature in the province of Valencia. Other notable readings include 34.6 degrees in Zarra, 34 degrees in Villena, and 33.5 degrees in Atzeneta del Maestrat. A yellow weather alert was activated for the northern interior of Valencia as temperatures were expected to exceed 36 degrees.

Conditions have further evolved into intense nighttime heatwaves. In Dénia, temperatures reached 33 degrees Celsius at 2:00 AM, while areas such as Peñíscola, Corbera, and Busot recorded 29 degrees during early morning hours. The Asociación Valenciana de Meteorólogos (Avamet) noted these “torrid” or “equatorial” nights—where minimum temperatures do not fall below 25 degrees—can hinder sleep and pose risks to vulnerable populations. In Torrevieja, thermal sensations are expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius due to high humidity, despite forecasts suggesting a potential for rain toward the end of the week.
