CNBB institutional activities and political messaging

Overview

The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) has engaged in both internal organizational planning and public political commentary.

Internally, the CNBB held strategic meetings focused on cultural preservation and pastoral initiatives. The Regional Sul-1 Commission worked toward cataloging the Church’s material and immaterial cultural heritage, including historical churches and archives. Concurrently, the CNBB Advisory Group discussed communication strategies for the 2027 Fraternity and Evangelization campaigns, including the development of a new website.

Following the confirmation of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Geraldo Alckmin as winners of the presidential election, the CNBB issued a formal message calling for national pacification and the overcoming of political polarization. The bishops urged the new administration to prioritize the dignity of the human person, the eradication of hunger and poverty, and the protection of vulnerable populations. Additionally, the CNBB advocated for the defense of life from conception to natural death and the strengthening of democratic institutions. In its response to the election results, the CNBB specifically called for a rejection of “political polarization, violence, and disinformation” while emphasizing the need for social justice and access to essential services such as health, education, and housing.
