Cocaine smuggling arrest at Haneda Airport

Overview

In October 2026, Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested five Malaysian nationals at Haneda Airport for allegedly smuggling approximately five kilograms of cocaine from Kuala Lumpur.

Customs officials detected the drugs after noticing unusually thick soles on a suspect’s footwear. Upon inspection, officers found that each individual had concealed 500 grams of cocaine beneath the insoles of both shoes, totaling one kilogram per person. The street value of the seized cocaine is estimated at 120 million yen.

During questioning, four of the suspects admitted to the charges. One 24-year-old suspect stated he was recruited via Telegram for a job paying 8,000 ringgit to transport illegal drugs overseas. A 25-year-old woman denied the allegations, claiming she was unaware of the contents in her possession. Police are investigating whether the group was recruited by a criminal syndicate based in Malaysia.
