Colombia earthquake response and damage assessment
Overview
Following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10, 2026, with an epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó, authorities in Colombia have initiated widespread structural assessments.
In Bogotá, the Institute of Urban Development (IDU) activated safety protocols to inspect 233 bridges and major road corridors, including the Autopista Sur and Avenida NQS, for fissures or slab issues. As of the initial inspection period, no structural damage had been reported in the capital’s bridges.
In Pereira, a team of 13 volunteer engineers from Medellín, representing institutions such as EAFIT and the Universidad Nacional, arrived to evaluate damage to buildings and educational institutions. This technical mission, coordinated between Antioquia and Pereira risk management entities, aims to provide reports to guide recovery and safety decisions. Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez noted that over 90 personnel have been deployed to assist regions including Cali, Pereira, Manizales, and Quindío.
