Colombia Petro administration faces fiscal and drug挑战

In early July 2026 Colombia’s fiscal watchdog warned that President Gustavo Petro’s government had overstated tax revenue by 33 trillion pesos and under‑estimated spending by 60 trillion pesos, leaving the incoming de la Espriella administration with a narrow fiscal margin and heightened debt‑service pressures. Finance‑minister‑designate Miguel Gómez responded with spending freezes and debt‑restructuring plans, while vice‑president‑elect José Manuel Restrepo criticised the outgoing administration on land, security and fiscal matters.

Later in July the defence ministry reported that 3,300 tonnes of cocaine were seized during Petro’s term – a volume equal to the total seized by the three preceding governments – and that Colombian intelligence contributed roughly 60 % of global interdictions. Coca cultivation remained broadly stable, with a reduction of about 9,000 ha over the previous eight months and 99.6 % of the country now coca‑free. Extraditions numbered 711, mainly to the United States, while the UNODC confirmed Colombia as the world’s leading coca producer.

On 23 July authorities disclosed a 2.5‑tonne shipment hidden in compressed natural‑gas cylinders intercepted in Valle del Cauca, valued at over 13.9 billion pesos. The same day they highlighted a series of coordinated busts across the region: large cocaine hauls in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Mexico, as well as additional seizures of cannabis and other narcotics. These operations underscore a continued, region‑wide crackdown on drug trafficking networks and reinforce calls for sustained crop‑substitution programmes targeting 40,000 ha of alternative agriculture.
