Colombia road infrastructure development

In late June 2026 the Colombian government announced the opening of two new urban road projects: a Malecón route in the coastal city of Tumaco and the El Edén avenue in Valledupar. These works marked a continued focus on expanding local transport links.

A month later, President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella unveiled a broader highway redesign called “Vía Milagro,” which will replace the existing Ciénaga–Barranquilla road. The plan combines a dual‑carriageway upgrade with ecological restoration of the Ciénaga Grande and the Magdalena River’s access to the Caribbean Sea, and includes provisions for artisanal fishing, tourism, and nearby communities. Environment Minister Fabio Arjona and Transport Minister Elsa Noguera were named to lead the technical work. The project, budgeted at 2.7 trillion pesos, targets completion by 2032, with a 3.2‑km segment already under construction and agreements reached with local palafitic settlements.
