Colombian agricultural production declines

Overview

Colombia is experiencing significant declines in agricultural production, particularly within the coffee and mango sectors due to adverse weather conditions.

In the coffee sector, production fell by 15% during the 2025-2026 cycle, dropping to 12.65 million 60-kilogram bags from 14.87 million the previous year. Germán Bahamón, general manager of the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros, attributed this decline to adverse weather and lower yields. While coffee exports decreased by 12%, there were indications of a slight recovery in September with a 6% production increase compared to the same month in 2025. Further data indicates that between January and September 2026, production dropped 10% compared to the same period in 2025, driven by excessive rainfall that disrupted flowering and delayed fruit maturation.

Recent data from Asoexport and Analdex shows that coffee exports fell by 13.8% between January and September 2026, with 8.45 million bags exported compared to 9.80 million in the same period of 2025. Gustavo Gómez Montero, executive president of Asoexport, attributed this to the ‘scissors effect,’ where exporters face a simultaneous squeeze of decreasing peso-denominated income due to the revaluation of the Colombian peso and rising operational costs, including labor and minimum wage hikes. For the full coffee year (October 2025 to September 2026), total shipments dropped by 11% to 11.68 million bags.

The mango industry is also facing a crisis, with production dropping approximately 30% compared to the previous year. Gloria Isabel Morales, general manager of Fedemango, cited climate issues, production difficulties, and technical assistance challenges as primary factors. This reduction is expected to result in a 15% decrease in mango exports. Additionally, the sector is contending with phytosanitary challenges, including fruit flies and anthracnose disease, alongside regulatory costs and international residue requirements.
