Commemoration of Archangel Michael miracle

Overview

September 6 marks the Orthodox commemoration of the miracle of Archangel Michael in Phrygia. Religious tradition holds that a healing spring appeared in the region, leading to the construction of a temple.

Accounts of the event describe how an ascetic, identified as Archippos or Archip, served at the sanctuary. When local individuals attempted to destroy the site by diverting rivers to flood the temple, the Archangel reportedly intervened, causing the waters to merge and settle into the ground to save the sanctuary. This event is said to have given the location the name Chonae.
