Commemoration of International Day of Rural Women

Overview

As the International Day of Rural Women is observed, global initiatives continue to emphasize the essential contributions of women to agriculture, food security, and socio-economic stability. This observance aligns with the United Nations’ designation of 2026 as the International Year of the Female Farmer, highlighting the urgency to address gender inequalities in agrifood systems.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, discussions focus on the need for better access to land, credit, and technology. In Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, professional groups are emphasizing the importance of digital literacy, technical skills, and leadership to prepare for a technology-driven agricultural sector. In Uruguay, recent initiatives have focused on providing technical assistance and training for female producers in small localities. In Mexico, officials have highlighted the importance of rural women in Michoacán, noting government support programs such as the ‘Pensión Mujeres Bienestar’.

In Spain, commemorations for the October 15 observance have included diverse local activities. In the Guadiana Integral Municipality Association, workshops addressed consumer rights, personal growth, and gender mandates related to caregiving. The ONCE Social Group released a special lottery coupon to support the visibility of rural women, including those living with disabilities. In Herencia, the ‘Vinculadas’ photographic exhibition highlighted different generations of women, while musical performances encouraged artistic pursuits. In Corella, film screenings and debates addressed gender inequality as part of the ‘More rural women deciding’ campaign in Navarra, which seeks to increase female representation in leadership and political roles.

In Africa, projects like the APGAF in Togo aim to empower women through sustainable ginger production and improved market access via cooperatives.
