Commemoration of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya

On the 110th birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, political leaders and Chief Ministers across India gathered to pay tribute to the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader. In New Delhi, BJP officials, the Vice President, and the Lok Sabha Speaker honored Upadhyaya, describing his philosophies of ‘Integral Humanism’ (Ekatma Manavtavad) and ‘Antyodaya’ as the foundational pillars of the current administration’s governance and development models.

State-level commemorations expanded the tribute nationwide. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha noted that Upadhyaya’s vision of balanced development for the body, mind, and soul remains essential for societal progress. In Gujarat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel led floral tributes in Ahmedabad, while leaders from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Odisha also linked Upadhyaya’s principles to contemporary welfare schemes and national self-reliance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ event at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Park in New Delhi. This cultural trend, designed to engage younger generations like Gen Z, blends traditional devotional music and kirtans with high-energy, contemporary concert presentations featuring modern lighting. During the musical gathering, the Prime Minister joined the audience in singing and clapping to devotional songs and was seen playing a small percussion instrument, such as a kanjira, during hymns dedicated to Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman.

The event sparked political friction. Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticized the Prime Minister, questioning his priorities and suggesting that while Modi has time for ‘Bhajan Clubbing’, he has not addressed serious questions regarding the Election Commission. The BJP responded by accusing the Congress party of mocking India’s cultural and devotional traditions.
