Community and educational social projects in Brazil

Overview

Various social and educational initiatives are being implemented across Brazil to promote culture, heritage, and community development.

In Guarulhos, São Paulo, the Instituto Brasil Solidário (IBS) organized a series of workshops at EPG Jorge Amado municipal school for elementary students and educators. The program featured 11 different activities, including music making, T-shirt printing, and puppet theater, alongside a gastronomic component involving chefs from Venezuela, Iran, and Uganda.

Other regional efforts include the ‘Projeto Poetas da Escola’ in São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, which connected students with local guardians of intangible heritage to share oral histories. In the Baixada Fluminense region, the ‘Escritas Subversivas’ project utilized local women’s literature to explore themes of memory and territory with high school students. Additionally, the Enactus Team at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul has been developing projects focused on sustainability and the empowerment of riverside and quilombola communities.

Expanding on environmental education, the Instituto Coral Vivo has selected 50 basic education teachers from 12 states to be recognized for pedagogical projects centered on ocean culture and conservation. Through the ‘Programa Literatura Atlântica’, these educators will meet in Rio de Janeiro to present diverse initiatives, such as citizen science expeditions in Pontal do Paraná and artistic presentations regarding mangroves in Santa Cruz Cabrália. To promote diversity, 25% of the program spots were reserved for affirmative action, including Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIAPN+, and people with disabilities.
