Community health initiatives in Senegal and Burkina Faso

Overview

Community health initiatives in Senegal and Burkina Faso have focused on providing free medical services and preventative care to underserved populations.

In Fatick, Senegal, an initiative organized by Aly Thior provided medical consultations, professional advice, and the distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to assist with malaria prevention. Subsequent efforts expanded across the region, including a day of free consultations in Thiamène Cayor by the association ‘Thiamène Santé et Solidarité’ and mobile maternity and pediatric care in Niangoloko, Burkina Faso.

Recent efforts in Senegal have further expanded medical access through home-based care and specialized services. In the Kaffrine region, community health workers from the Foundation for a Healthier Senegal (FOHSEN) conducted 884 home visits across the Nganda and Kélimane health posts during August. These visits aimed to mitigate barriers such as transportation and distance, resulting in a 42.3% increase in follow-ups for pregnant women compared to July.

Additionally, in Saint-Louis, the association Unis pour la Promotion et la Protection de la Famille (U2PF) and the Léona/HLM Neighborhood Council, with medical support from Medisol International, organized a health event at the Diamaguène-Léona-HLM health post. The initiative provided free circumcision services to 105 children, exceeding its target of 100 beneficiaries, and included the distribution of new clothing to support vulnerable families.
