Community repair and reuse initiatives in Austria and DE

Community-led repair and reuse initiatives are expanding across Austria and Germany to promote sustainability and waste reduction.

In Austria, Re-Use Austria has launched a national digital platform, repaircafes.at, to aggregate information for over 100 repair café initiatives. This network utilizes approximately 1,600 volunteers who perform about 15,000 repair attempts annually, achieving a 67% success rate. The organization reports that these efforts prevent roughly 108 tonnes of waste and save 2,500 tonnes of CO₂ each year. Additionally, the Re-Use-Box programme has distributed over 20,000 collection boxes and bags to municipalities, significantly increasing the collection of household items, electronics, and toys.

Local initiatives continue to offer specialized services, such as bicycle maintenance checks in Ried, Austria, and technical assistance for electrical appliances, clothing, and software in Erbach, Germany. These volunteer-led events often incorporate upcycling collaborations and food-sharing initiatives to further reduce environmental impact.
