Community volunteerism initiatives in Italy

In Legnano, the 22nd edition of the ‘Estate Gentile’ (Gentle Summer) project has concluded. Organized by Auser Ticino Olona, the initiative paired 30 student volunteers with more than 80 elderly residents to provide companionship and practical assistance, such as grocery shopping, medication collection, and accompaniment to medical appointments or banks.

The program also functioned as a monitoring tool to identify structural issues in seniors' homes, including a lack of elevators or air conditioning, to alert relevant institutions. The project received recognition from the Lombardy region and the Vatican Secretariat of State, with the Pope issuing a letter praising the ‘gift of community.’

In a related development of community service in the region, Novi Ligure has updated its Register of Volunteering for 2026, expanding its list of recognized associations from 40 to 56 entities across sectors such as social services, culture, and environmental protection.
