Overview

The Ancona public transport operator, Conerobus, has undergone significant structural and operational changes to address financial strain and service disruptions.

In early August 2026, the company’s shareholders approved statutory amendments to transition from a fully public-owned entity to a mixed-ownership model. Under this new structure, the Municipality of Ancona and other public entities retain a 51% stake, while private investors gain three seats on the board. Officials described the reform as an “epochal” step intended to increase managerial autonomy, efficiency, and competitiveness ahead of upcoming European public-transport tenders.

Following these governance reforms, the Municipality of Ancona introduced eight new methane-powered Citymood buses into the Conerobus fleet. This investment, part of the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility, aims to modernize the service and mitigate issues caused by an aging fleet, such as mechanical failures and canceled trips.
