Constanța freight train accidents
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 a freight train derailed at Constanța’s Palas station, sending four wagons off the track and overturning a fifth loaded with sulphur. No injuries were reported, and specialist teams were dispatched to secure the site, clear the wagons and investigate the cause while passenger services continued unaffected.
Less than three weeks later, on 2 August 2026, a leak of liquefied petroleum gas was detected in one of the 34 wagons of a freight train parked at Dorobanțu station, also in Constanța County. The leak forced a temporary suspension of train movements; emergency crews, the railway inspectorate and police contained the defect and restored traffic by 08:55. The incident delayed 12 passenger trains, resulting in 829 minutes of lost time. The freight train involved belonged to private operator Tehnotrans and was managed by national railway company CFR SA.
Both events highlight recurring safety challenges on Constanța’s freight corridors, prompting investigations and coordinated emergency responses to minimise disruption to passenger services.
