Construction accidents and building collapses in Africa

Overview

A series of construction accidents and structural failures have been reported across several African nations.

In August, fatalities occurred during separate incidents in Sierra Leone and Kenya. In Lungi, Sierra Leone, a mudslide at an FB Group construction site during underground pipe installation resulted in the deaths of two workers, a Sierra Leonean and a Senegalese national. In Syokimau, Kenya, a wall collapse at a Vakratinda Development Limited site killed one worker and injured five others.

In September, further incidents were reported in Kenya and Nigeria. In Kisii County, Kenya, a five-storey building under construction collapsed, prompting search and rescue operations by the Kenya Red Cross and local emergency services. In Abuja, Nigeria, a three-storey structure collapsed in the Wuse Zone 4 area. This collapse occurred shortly after the Federal Capital Territory Administration had ordered the building to be vacated due to visible structural cracks. While the Nigerian incident caused significant property damage, authorities reported no confirmed fatalities at that site.
