Contemporary art events in Recife, Brazil

Overview

In October 2026, various contemporary art events were organized in Brazil. The 4th Bienal Black Brazil Art initiated its ‘Artistas (em) Conversação’ program, a series of ten international virtual meetings intended to connect Brazilian Black art with the global African diaspora. This virtual phase involved 125 creators from Brazil and several international locations, including Germany, Canada, and Portugal, serving as a prelude to a physical occupation in Recife.

The biennial, created in 2019 by curator Patrícia Brito, will focus on Black, Afro-diasporic, and decolonial artistic production. The Recife program includes the collective exhibition ‘As Cinco Peles’, featuring 125 artists. Scheduled activities include exhibitions at the Museu de Arte Moderna Aloisio Magalhães (MAMAM) starting November 7 and at the Centro Cultural Cais do Sertão starting December 7. Other venues include the Museu da Abolição and the Escola Técnica Estadual Alfredo Freyre, offering free programming such as workshops and musical performances.

Concurrently, the fifth edition of Art. Pe, the Contemporary Art Fair of Pernambuco, took place at the Recife Expo Center from October 14 to 18. The fair featured 75 exhibitors, including 55 galleries, and provided platforms for Brazilian postmodern art, as well as productions from Argentina and Portugal. Notable participants included the Perman Art Gallery, which presented ‘Paisagem, Corpo e Caos-Mundo’ curated by Joana D’Arc Lima. The event also hosted the Arena BNB Cultural, providing portfolio reviews for Northeastern artists and industry discussions.
