Contraband smuggling at Ibara Custodial Centre
Overview
Authorities at the Ibara Custodial Centre in Ogun State, Nigeria, have intercepted multiple attempts to smuggle contraband into the facility.
In late August, a woman identified as Iyabo Sowunmi was arrested after security personnel discovered suspected ‘Colos’—a psychoactive synthetic drug—concealed inside a sachet of beverage powder. The drugs were allegedly intended for her son, an inmate on death row. The suspect was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
In late September, officials intercepted another smuggling attempt involving Shobowale Balikis. She was reportedly attempting to disguise alcohol, identified as Ethano, inside a bottled water pack intended for an inmate. Balikis was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation.
The Nigerian Correctional Service Ogun Command has reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy regarding the smuggling of contraband to maintain safety and discipline within its facilities.
