Controversy over Hamas fighter's university ties

Overview

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, released a video profiling Noureddine Mohammed Al-Jamasi, a fighter who died in combat in the Gaza Strip on October 8, 2025. The footage, part of a series titled ‘Aqmar al-Tufan’ (Moons of the Flood), highlighted Al-Jamasi’s decision to leave his university studies in Budapest, Hungary, to return to Gaza following the October 2023 outbreak of war.

Following the release of this information, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) launched an investigation after discovering that its 2026 yearbook had memorialized Al-Jamasi. Al-Jamasi had reportedly been a Palestinian scholarship student studying Computer Science and Engineering at the institution. In response to the controversy, BME has removed the affected publication while conducting its inquiry.
