Controversy over song use in Mirzapur: The Movie

Overview

Rajasthani musician Rapperiya Baalam has alleged that his song ‘Shoorveer’ was used in the film ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ without his permission or credit. Baalam expressed disappointment on Instagram, stating that the lack of authorization was “deeply hurtful.” He further objected to the context of the song, noting it was a tribute to Maharana Pratap and questioning its use in a sequence that appears to glorify fictional gangsters, which he described as “disrespectful to Rajasthan and the legacy of Maharana Pratap.”

Following these allegations, BJP leader Rajendra Rathore requested the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to remove the song from the film. In a letter to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi, Rathore argued that linking the values of Maharana Pratap with gang culture, drug peddlers, and violence is objectionable and hurts public sentiments regarding the historical and cultural heritage of the Mewar ruler.
