Controversy surrounding comedian Samay Raina

Comedian Samay Raina became the subject of political and legal scrutiny following controversial remarks made on the show ‘India’s Got Latent’.

Initially, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Raina for comments regarding a fellow comedian’s Bihari roots. This led to condemnation from various officials, including Bihar Minister Mithilesh Tiwari and Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur, who argued that religious identities and the history of Kashmiri Pandits should not be used for ridicule.

In a subsequent legal development, the Supreme Court of India quashed First Information Reports (FIRs) and criminal proceedings against Raina and four others. The court granted relief after the group complied with judicial directions to conduct awareness programs and fundraising for individuals with disabilities, specifically those affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). While closing the criminal cases, the Supreme Court noted that it would continue to examine the regulation of online content and seek input from persons with disabilities to establish sensitivity standards.
