Copper thefts in Italy

Overview

A series of copper thefts and acts of vandalism have been reported across the Lombardy and Piedmont regions of Italy.

In Lombardy, incidents included an attempted theft of 50 meters of copper downpipes at a cemetery in Moscazzano and the vandalism of an Enel X electric vehicle charging station in Corbetta. The theft in Corbetta, where power cables were cut, has left the station out of service and raised concerns regarding the future placement of public charging infrastructure.

In Borgosesia, the Carabinieri Forestale arrested two residents of Gattinara following the theft of nearly 200 kilograms of copper wire from a disused warehouse area. The arrest followed a high-speed chase. Local authorities have identified copper theft as a growing criminal phenomenon targeting sectors such as energy, telecommunications, transport, and various public and religious sites.
