Coquimbo flood recovery and festival reactivation

Overview

In late July 2026, Coquimbo’s mayor Ali Manouchehri announced the cancellation of the city’s traditional La Pampilla festival after a severe frontal system caused widespread flooding, road damage and isolation of several localities. The municipality redirected more than 1.8 billion Chilean pesos to reconstruction, adding to a previously pledged 1.5 billion pesos for a total first-stage fund of over 3.3 billion pesos, and criticised the national government for not providing immediate emergency financing.

By early August, the mayor presented a detailed damage diagnosis and reported that the emergency response budget had risen to 6.706 billion pesos. The expanded funding targets road repairs, flood-water management, coastal road upgrades and drainage improvements, while the municipality continues to seek additional national resources to complete larger works. The same period also saw a neighboring Peruvian municipality launch its own reconstruction efforts, underscoring a regional focus on post-disaster recovery.

In a significant policy shift in mid-August, Mayor Manouchehri reversed the decision to suspend the La Pampilla festival. Following consultations with the fishing, merchant, and hospitality sectors, along with agencies such as Corfo and Sercotec, the city confirmed the event will proceed this September as a “solidary, austere, and focused on reactivation” version. This new model aims to support local economic recovery through a modified financial structure where the city covers technical and assembly costs, while artists receive travel and lodging coverage instead of their usual fees. Entry fees are expected to be approximately $2,000, with free access for priority groups.

To facilitate this reactivation, the municipality has launched ‘La Pampilla de la Gente’, opening registration for vendors, food trucks, and service providers. In-person registration for food trucks and mechanical rides is scheduled for late August, while applications for chemical toilet services are being managed online.
