Corporate earnings performance trends

Overview

Recent financial reports from multinational corporations indicate varying degrees of profit compression despite shifts in revenue.

Gruma, a Mexican corn flour and tortilla producer, reported an 11% decrease in net profits for the first nine months of 2026, with a 1% decline in third-quarter net income. The company noted that global sales volumes fell due to inflation and consumer belt-tightening, specifically seeing a 4% drop in the United States. To defend profitability, the company pivoted toward premium margins, resulting in a 3% increase in cumulative revenue.

Klabin, a Brazilian paper and pulp company, reported a consolidated net profit of R$ 393 million for the third quarter of 2026, representing an 18% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Although this result exceeded the IBES consensus expectation of R$ 329.5 million, the company’s shares faced downward pressure due to rising operational costs. While net revenue grew by 3% to R$ 5.57 billion, adjusted EBITDA fell 12% year-on-year to R$ 1.86 billion. Margin compression was attributed to increased freight costs, higher port expenses, inflationary pressures on inputs, and preventive measures against the El Niño phenomenon.

Other third-quarter results show further sector volatility. Ambev reported a net profit of R$ 4.37 billion, exceeding analyst expectations despite a 10.2% year-on-year decline; however, its adjusted net profit grew 14.3% to R$ 4.393 billion, supported by EBITDA growth and lower financial expenses. Conversely, US-based Pilgrim’s Pride saw adjusted net profit fall to US$ 117.7 million, as increased chicken supply in the United States drove down prices and squeezed operating margins, causing adjusted EBITDA to drop 50% year-on-year.
