Corruption allegations and voter fraud claims in Karnataka
Overview
The political conflict in Karnataka has intensified following allegations of a systematic conspiracy to delete legitimate voters from electoral rolls. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has accused the BJP of using pre-filled Form 7 applications in bulk to target minority communities, Dalits, and backward classes during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He reported that draft rolls show 1.07 crore names removed, reducing the state’s registered electorate to 4.46 crore, a situation he characterized as a “criminal conspiracy”.
In response, Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra rejected the claims, stating the assertion of 50 lakh deletions is false. BJP MLC C T Ravi further countered the Chief Minister, alleging that Hindu voters are being disproportionately removed, claiming that in the Chikkamagaluru constituency, approximately 32,000 of 37,000 removed names belonged to Hindu voters.
Shivakumar has since escalated his accusations, alleging that workers from the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) engaged in a “big criminal conspiracy” by forcibly snatching and burning over one lakh Form-7 applications and threatening Booth Level Officers. He also questioned how applicants obtained private electoral data to falsely declare living voters as deceased.
In response to these controversies, Karnataka police have booked several individuals across various constituencies for allegedly attempting to maliciously delete Muslim voters through bulk filings. Chief Electoral Officer V. Anbukkumar stated that no voters have been deleted based on these Form-7 objections thus far, noting that all applications will undergo standard examination procedures.
