Corruption and fraud investigations in Mexico and Chile
Overview
Authorities in Mexico and Chile have conducted arrests of public officials in connection with corruption and fraud investigations.
In Mexico, ‘Operation Enjambre’ led to the arrest of 21 individuals in Suchiapa, Chiapas. The detainees include the current mayor, Jorge Lorenzo Lara Cordero, and former mayor Alexis Nucamendi Gómez, alongside municipal police officers. The investigation focuses on charges of abuse of authority, corruption, and criminal association following an incident where a detainee was released from municipal jail during a narcotics operation. Following these arrests, the Morena party expelled Lara Cordero from its ranks.
Relatedly, in the State of Mexico, seven individuals—including former public officials and civilians—have been sentenced for their roles in the escape of Pedro Luis ‘Wicho’ Hernández Paz, the elected mayor of Santo Tomás de los Plátanos. The escape occurred on December 17, 2024, during an ‘Operación Enjambre’ law enforcement operation intended to serve an arrest warrant during his inauguration. Sentences for charges including evasion, abuse of authority, and violent robbery range from four years and eight months to 14 years in prison.
In Chile, ten officials were arrested in the Maule region as part of ‘Operation Castillo de Naipes’. The investigation targets a corruption network involving current and former employees of the Maule Regional Government and several municipalities, including Colbún, Longaví, Villa Alegre, and San Javier. The group is accused of working with a private construction company to defraud the state of approximately 2.972 billion pesos through bribery, tax offenses, and money laundering.
In Bolivia, the Ministry of Transparency is investigating a potential economic loss of over 52 million bolivianos involving the state telecommunications company, Entel, regarding the irregular purchase of 50,000 IPTV decoders.
