Costa Rica Caso Éxodo investigation

Overview

Event producer Don Stockwell remains under investigation in Costa Rica as part of the ‘Caso Éxodo’, a probe into alleged drug trafficking and money laundering. Prosecutors are examining whether approximately $859,000 in illicit funds were used to finance three large-scale musical events. The investigation targets a suspected criminal organization allegedly linked to Edwin Vargas García, known as ‘Sobrino’.

While Stockwell was previously released following his arrest on October 7, the Costa Rican Public Ministry is now considering requesting six months of preventive detention. During judicial statements, Stockwell denied receiving money from criminal elements, asserting that his role is strictly to find investors and that he had no reason to suspect funds from Vargas García were derived from illegal activities. He further claimed to have previously rejected investment offers from known criminals, including the late Elías AKL, due to suspicions of criminal involvement.

Stockwell’s defense attorneys have criticized the prosecution’s move, arguing that the request for detention lacks “procedural loyalty” and may be driven by media pressure. They maintain that the case should be analyzed collectively regarding all implicated parties rather than isolating Stockwell.

Additional scrutiny has emerged regarding Stockwell’s political ties. Financial records from the Supreme Elections Tribunal (TSE) indicate that between June and July 2025, Stockwell provided over ₡14 million in in-kind donations to the Unidos Podemos political party. Furthermore, Deputy Esmeralda Britton clarified that Stockwell’s recent visit to the Legislative Assembly was intended to discuss a cultural festival involving figures such as Quincy Jones II and Snoop Dogg, noting the legislature was unaware of his criminal investigation at the time.
