Costa Rica fire department modernization and outreach

The Benemérito Cuerpo de Bomberos de Costa Rica has transitioned from community-focused outreach to technical modernization of its emergency services.

Initially, the department focused on public safety education through the ‘Bomberos de Corazón’ initiative. This program utilized interactive simulations, such as earthquake and fire evacuation exercises, to teach families safety protocols and wildfire prevention.

Subsequently, the department launched a nationwide modernization effort aimed at reducing rescue times. This includes the introduction of advanced training technology, specifically a new hydrocarbon emergency simulator at the National Fire Academy in Patarrá. This tool is designed to train professional firefighters and gas station employees in controlled, realistic conditions. These technological upgrades coincide with existing legal requirements under Law 8228, which mandates that businesses and property owners maintain fire safety certifications to avoid administrative penalties and civil liability.
