Counterfeit Nicardia medicine investigation in India

Authorities in Gujarat have launched an investigation into a counterfeit medicine network following the detection of duplicate Nicardia Retard 10 tablets, a cardiac medication manufactured by J. B. Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Initial operations began on August 19, with officials inspecting medical stores and wholesale establishments across Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Timbi, and Bhavnagar. During this phase, more than 24,000 strips of suspected duplicate medication were seized.

The investigation subsequently expanded into an interstate crackdown led by the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch. Authorities identified a supply chain stretching from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to Gujarat, resulting in the arrest of three individuals in Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Investigators traced the counterfeit stock to specific entities, including ‘Parshva Medical Agency’ in Ahmedabad, which allegedly sourced products from ‘Sena Medical’ in Lucknow and ‘AVR Medicos’ in Jaipur. The suspects reportedly used authentic product names, labels, and batch information to produce tablets that were difficult to distinguish from the genuine medication.

On August 27, the Ahmedabad City Crime Branch and the Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) confirmed the dismantling of the interstate racket. The arrests included Darshil Sanghvi of Ahmedabad, alongside Devendra Yadav and Umang Rastogi from Lucknow. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Limited regarding counterfeit ‘NICARDIA RETARD 10’ (Nifedipine Sustained Release Tablets IP 10 mg) bearing batch number ACG25007.

Officials traced the distribution from Sena Medical in Lucknow to Parshva Medical Agency in Ahmedabad, which supplied outlets in Nadiad, Bhuj, and Kutch. It is estimated that approximately 1,500 strips, or nearly 15,000 tablets, may have been sold to consumers over a four-month period.
