CPBL foreign player roster developments

As the August 31 foreign player registration deadline in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) approaches, teams are finalizing roster adjustments.

The Fubon Guardians signed American right-handed pitcher Tyler Ivey, a former Houston Astros draft pick, to bolster their rotation. Ivey, who previously played in the Mexican League and for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, is currently training with the Guardians’ second team. Manager Gotoh Mitsutaka is evaluating several candidates to fill four available spots, including Matthews, Haliou, Suzuki Shunsuke, and potentially Tai Wei. Recent evaluations noted Matthews’ quality start and Haliou’s fastball strength, though Gotoh emphasized that each candidate has specific areas for improvement.

The TSG Hawks have secured right-handed pitcher Wilmer Font, known as ‘Wei Feng Shan’, who brings six years of Major League experience and a recent high strikeout rate in the Mexican League. To finalize their roster, the Hawks released foreign pitcher Bradin Hagens, who posted a 4.74 ERA, and registered Font to join Eric Stout and David Buchanan in the foreign pitching staff. The Hawks also signed infielder Sotaro Nagata to increase depth.

Following an injury to closer Lin Shih-chang, manager Hung Yi-chung has focused on bullpen stability. While substitute Huang Chun has performed better than expected, the team continues to address composure issues in the relief corps. Additionally, the Hawks registered several local players, including catcher Chang Chao-yuan, who is returning from ligament reconstruction surgery.
