In the months following the tragedy, survivors have undergone intensive medical treatment. Leonardo Bove, a 16-year-old from Milan who suffered burns to approximately 60% of his body, was discharged from Niguarda Hospital after seven months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. Bove stated, “I saw my life slip away in one night, I don't want to lose it anymore.”
Investigations into the disaster have since revealed significant regulatory and safety failures at the establishment, which was co-owned by Jacques and Jessica Moretti. Reports indicate that an extensive renovation in 2015 was conducted without a building permit, bypassing fire safety inspections. Furthermore, non-compliant acoustic foam was installed in the basement, and a smoking room added in 2017 was never properly inspected after being flagged by authorities. Previous inspections in 2018 and 2019 had identified hazards such as flammable wood paneling, a lack of fire blankets, and insufficient staff training. Jacques Moretti has been placed in pre-trial detention as the investigation continues.
