Crime and kidnapping operations in Sonora

Overview

Law enforcement operations in Sonora, Mexico, have targeted kidnapping and violent crime through several high-profile interventions.

In Puerto Peñasco, a joint operation involving the Mexican Army, Navy, and the Agencia Ministerial de Investigación Criminal (AMIC) rescued three mining workers kidnapped from the Sierra Pinta region. The operation involved a shootout with criminal elements that left three AMIC agents wounded. Authorities detained seven suspects and seized a large arsenal, including more than 40 long guns, machine guns, improvised explosive devices, and various drugs, along with several stolen vehicles.

In Hermosillo, authorities conducted separate operations resulting in the arrest of individuals linked to a double homicide and an attack on a prison official. During these arrests, officers seized an AK-47 and narcotics. Additionally, AMIC investigators used drones to locate and rescue a 17-year-old boy held captive in the El Sapo ejido. The victim indicated the kidnapping was related to a conflict over stolen goods.
