Overview

Law enforcement in Asunción, Paraguay, has conducted several operations targeting violent crime and organized criminal networks.

In early September, police arrested Miguel Ángel Benítez Rodríguez, a suspected gang leader, following a machete assault on a 15-year-old boy in the Tacumbú neighborhood. Benítez, who reportedly acted under the influence of crack cocaine, is believed to lead a carjacking gang responsible for multiple robberies in the area.

Later in the month, authorities executed two additional operations. In the Barrio Obrero neighborhood, police arrested Walter Gerardo Olmedo in connection with an attempted murder; the raid resulted in the seizure of firearms, narcotics, and a vehicle used in the attack. Separately, Interpol detained Shirley Natalia Cubilla Colman in the Sajonia neighborhood following an extradition request. Cubilla Colman faces multiple charges, including criminal association, public intimidation, and possession of explosives or toxic substances, with a potential sentence of up to 35 years.
